I've always been fascinated with the idea of this film. It was the first attempt at an American Godzilla film back in 1983. The artwork I sketched directly off one of William Stout's incredible pieces of concept art for the film. According to interviews with Stout he claims he storyboarded something like 85 percent of the film in incredible detail! The guy literally put his heart and soul into the project and really believed in the script. I've read the script and being a die-hard Godzilla fan (and an independent filmmaker myself) I have my quibbles with it, but I'm the kind of fan that likes to embrace new ideas and different takes. I think for the era and the talent they had attached to it that it would have probably fared decently with an audience, and fans would have probably taken to it much better than the 1998 TriStar GODZILLA. You also have to remember the last Godzilla film that had been made up to that point was 1975's TERROR OF MECHAGODZILLA and the last Godzilla film American audiences likely saw in theaters was 1973's GODZILLA VS. MEGALON. It might have been a much needed breath of fresh air for the franchise, but most likely if it had been made the Heisei Godzilla films wouldn't have. And since the Heisei era films produced my personal favorite Godzilla film in 1989's GODZILLA VS. BIOLLANTE I can't have that! ;-) However it is fun to speculate. Speaking of speculation, check out some of my speculative credits at the bottom.
